Kitchen: Before and After

February 13, 2012

The kitchen cabinets are finished!

Here’s a before and after picture of our kitchen with a break-down of everything we have done.

The before picture–taken when we moved in

As you can see, we’ve done a lot. Except for the actual cabinets and layout, there isn’t anything that is the same from when we moved in. And we knew when we bought this house that we would change everything. I am so happy with the way our kitchen has turned out. We have been slowly tackling it bit by bit. The very first thing we did when we moved in was buy a refrigerator and paint–the rest of the appliances followed, along with the granite. Most recently we had the hardwood installed and the cabinets refinished.

This past weekend was spent putting our kitchen back together. The picture above is how the kitchen typically looks. There is not a lot of counter space so I do not keep much of anything set out permanantly. I like to keep it simple. The only things that are always on my counter are: Keurig (around the corner from the fridge), toaster oven (back left corner), tiered fruit basket and red soap dispenser (behind sink), Pottery Barn charging station and 2 upright black file folders for any loose papers (end of counter, right). I empty out the file folders weekly which keeps me organized.

Before I re-stocked our cabinets and drawers, I scrubbed everything down and lined all the drawers with contact paper.

The contents of our drawers were quickly dumped into this bin as the painters arrived to start working.

I laid everything out before putting things away. The new drawer organizers are from Bed Bath & Beyond.

Organized junk drawer–this holds my label maker, flashlights, take-out menus, ipods, cords and chargers, etc.

Flatware drawer and most used tools–I especially like the contact paper in this drawer, as it finally solves the problem of the flatware tray sliding around

Various cooking tools–the ones that aren’t frequently used are in a small tray in the back

If you are looking for some quick and inexpensive kitchen makeovers, try the following:

1. Add hardware to your cabinets and drawers

2. Update your window coverings

3. New rugs for the sink/door areas (my striped ones are the Olin rug from Crate & Barrel)

4. Organize your drawers–the inserts I bought start at $5.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond
